The Speculet™ – Coming Soon

Intravitreal injections are often recommended for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular occlusions with edema.  On average, each patient receives one injection every 4-6 weeks, sometimes in both eyes on the same day.  In order to properly and safely administer the injection, retinal specialists use what’s called an eyelid speculum to hold the lids open.

THE PROBLEM:

The current widely-used speculum is reminiscent of a medieval torture device.  So much so that a version of the metal speculum was even featured in a torture scene from Stanley Kubrick’s movie A Clockwork Orange. Patients often refer to it as “the clamp” or “the cage,” and for them, it’s the worst part of the injection process.

  • It’s uncomfortable
  • It poses insertion challenges in certain patients
  • Office efficiency can be affected as reusable speculums require disinfection, packaging and a long sterilization process

THE SOLUTION:

The Speculet™ is a newly designed reinvented speculum to effectively open the eyelids and provide a comfortable patient experience for intravitreal injections.  With the name stemming from speculum and -let (to connote small or tiny, e.g. droplet, islet, piglet, etc.), the Speculet™ is:

  • Comfortable
  • Easy to insert and remove
  • Disposable and inexpensive – no need for in-office sterilization and no risk of cross-contamination

Small yet mighty, the elegant design single-handedly improves patient comfort, the insertion process, and office efficiency all in one sterile package.

The Speculet™ incorporates an efficient and unique rotational insertion maneuver for the professional performing intravitreal injections. The instrument is small, inexpensive, disposable, durable, and simple yet effective.  Designed to be used by ophthalmologists and other medical professionals during office procedures.
